Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship

6th Annual Writing Retreat

August 7-9, 2020

WELCOME to our 6th Annual Heritage MMUF Writing Retreat scheduled for August 7, 8, and 9. Obviously, this year we will not be traveling to an interesting and stimulating geographic location as we have in the past (think Orcas Island), but rest assured the supportive and inspirational spirit that has been the foundation of our Writing Retreats for the past five years will still rule our hearts and minds as we gather together virtually this year!

Retreat Purpose and Process

The focus of our Writing Retreats over the past five years has been “The Personal Statement/Statement of Purpose.”  We have found this theme to be valuable, as most agree that this particular element of the Grad School Application can be the most challenging. It is no simple task to blend the unique narrative voices of the academic and the personal!

So, we will continue that theme for the Writing Retreat this year as well.  However, it will not be all work and no play. Our opening orientation session will provide an energizing icebreaker through which we will get to know one another. We will also introduce one or two contests (with prizes) we will be having, and provide details about sustenance—we plan to provide a lunch from Doordash each day!
