Support Heritage Nursing

The nursing program at Heritage is designed to equip students with the skills to excel in the health-care profession and empower them to advocate for their patients. Through our comprehensive, mission-focused program, our students build the foundation for a rewarding career that will allow them to help others and become leaders in their communities. Why support the Heritage University BSN program?

At Heritage, we have a passion for nurturing the health of the people in our community. Our BSN program is dedicated to preparing students to become health-care professionals that will graduate and go on to serve their communities. In fact, our curriculum emphasizes whole-family and community nursing, which teaches students to provide comprehensive care for a diverse range of patients, including multicultural populations and those from rural and underserved environments.

Students in this program are part of a supportive academic community, led by experienced and dedicated faculty. Heritage is home to state-of-the-art nurse training and has valuable health-care connections with regional hospitals and care centers that enable our students to gain hands-on experience ahead of graduation.

Christina Nyirati, Ph.D.’s came to Heritage University in 2014 and immediately set about to revitalize its nursing program. She drew upon her more than 30 years of nursing practice, as well as her years in nursing academia, to build a Bachelor of Nursing program that prepares students to be professional nurses that provide holistic, culturally inclusive care for patients and their family units. Under her leadership, the program has grown to include partnerships with healthcare providers throughout Washington state, including Children’s Hospital in Seattle, Yakima area hospitals and medical clinics, and Indian Health Services. She is currently working on building a RN to BSN program to give existing nurses a pathway to earn the bachelor’s degree that will allow them to advance in their careers.

Provider of Care

The Heritage baccalaureate nurse is prepared to assume accountability for the design and delivery of safe, holistic nursing; plans, implements, and evaluates nursing interventions from an ecological perspective for the individual, family, and community as the units of care.
The Heritage baccalaureate nurse practices the art of nursing by integrating aesthetic knowing in nursing care.

Scholar

The Heritage baccalaureate nurse explains how nursing’s fundamental patterns of knowing –personal, aesthetic, ethical, empirical and emancipatory –contribute to understanding the complexity of nursing care in the treatment of human response; and approaches nursing with a spirit of inquiry for understanding and application of nursing theories that explain and predict the outcomes of care.

Leader and Collaborator

The Heritage baccalaureate nurse works collaboratively as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team; utilizes effective written and oral communication and professional behaviors to foster shared decision-making and accountability among team members to optimize outcomes of care; and integrates technological and mathematical knowledge to create a culture of quality and safety to prevent systems errors.

Member of the Profession

The Heritage baccalaureate nurse embodies professional values and responsibilities defined by the standards and scope of practice for the registered professional nurse; the American Nurses Association (ANA) Standards of Professional Nursing Practice; and Code of Ethics with Interpretive Statements.
The Heritage baccalaureate nurse demonstrates caring ethical comportment; expresses passion for sustainability and justice; participates in the policy processes impacting the health of individuals, families, communities and populations; and works to increase access to care, especially for vulnerable populations and to overcome social determinants of health inequities. The graduate also will assume accountability for maintaining professional practice through self-reflection; and demonstrate continuous professional engagement and lifelong learning.

Heritage nursing students learn valuable skills

Through our program, our students gain a strong foundation for a career in nursing or for continued education. Opportunities for hands-on learning in our simulation lab and with regional partners help build vital soft skills such as organization, communication, attention to detail and quick thinking. All this, plus a rigorous academic curriculum, prepare them for a lifelong career in nursing.

Heritage nursing students get hands-on experience

Nursing students start working with patients during their second year of studies. Heritage is proud to have relationships with more than 20 health-care institutions across Washington, including Seattle Children’s Hospital, Yakima Health District and Virginia Mason Memorial Hospital Maternity Care. This means that in addition to having access to our clinical and simulation labs, our students also have opportunities to get real experience in patient care.
