About Our Program
The Master of Social Work program is designed for professionals who wish to expand their education and advance their careers as social workers. It equips them with the skills to work with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities. Emphasis is placed on anti-racism, diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging by utilizing scientific inquiry and promoting socially responsible policy through culturally responsive, strengths-based social work practice. The program graduates well-prepared practitioners who will serve rural, diverse and underrepresented communities to address structural and institutional inequities to facilitate and promote the well-being and quality of life for all people.
While the program trains students in advanced social work practice, students interested in serving as social workers in a K-12 school setting or who want to work with individuals with substance use disorders can take one of two optional course plans. Graduates who take either of these alternative pathways qualify to apply for additional certifications from the State of Washington.
You can earn your degree in just two years (5 semesters.) A ONE-YEAR ADVANCED STANDING TRACK IS AVAILABLE for students who meet admission requirements and have a Bachelor of Social Work from a CSWE-accredited undergraduate social work program. Heritage is the only university in the region that trains and graduates credentialed master’s level social workers.
The career outlook for master’s-level social workers is strong. Overall, the field of social work is growing at an above-average rate of 12%. This is especially true in rural communities. Projected employment growth for social workers in the specific fields of education and mental health and dependency services is slightly higher at 13% and 15%, respectively.
