Labyrinth Walk and Spiritual Reckoning with Black Life
- Where: Heritage Labyrinth
- When: Monday, February 6, 2023 – 12:15 p.m.
- Description: Participate in a “Spiritual Reckoning with Black Life” labyrinth walk and prayer event to recognize Black individuals who have suffered racial injustice and to celebrate what could have been. We will meet on the Heritage lawn at 12:15 p.m.
Black Excellence Poster Gallery and Reception
- Where: Petrie Hall Gallery
- When: Monday, February 21, 2023 – 12:15 p.m.
- Description: Explore Black excellence in various vocations through a walk through a gallery of posters created by UNIV 101 classes and other students. Vote on your favorite poster!
Black History Trivia Event
- Where: Zoom (link in MyHeritage under “Student Life” tab)
- When: February 23, 2023 – 12:00 p.m.
- Description: Test your knowledge of Black history by participating in trivia games on Zoom! Attend HU Black History Month events throughout the month of February for clues about Black History. Winners will receive special prizes from Black-owned businesses.
Mapping Activity
- Where: Donald K. North Library
- When: TBD
- Description: When people think of where African-American history occurred, the US southern states naturally come to mind. The Library has a map display to show where significant events and notable people made their mark across the US. Did you know that one of the first Black settlers in the Pacific Northwest was George W. Bush? Find out why Utah was an outlier slave territory until 1862. What geographic event prompted Spencer Williams to compose the woeful blues song, “I Ain’t Got Nobody”?
- Come to the Library and view the big map to your left as you enter to learn more about where in the US African-American history occurred!
Library Display – Libraries as Social Change Agents
- Where: Donald K. North Library
- When: TBD
- Description: When the word “library” is said, different images come to mind: books, electronic resources, study space, meeting friends, helpful staff, more books… But Libraries have played a significant role in fostering social change. As early as 1823 a library was open for former slaves in New York State. Unfortunately, the segregation of libraries continued for a century and a half. Libraries became a touchstone of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. In Greenville, SC, 8 college students were arrested for refusing to leave the all-white public library. Among those taken into custody was a young Jessie Jackson. The protest paid off as the library was desegregated a few weeks later. At the same time, over 80 “Freedom Libraries” sprung up across the south in response to such discrimination. To this day, libraries support social change, inclusion, and equity. Come visit the Heritage University Library to learn more!
