Heritage University welcomed more than 100 high school students from across the Yakima Valley for the 2026 Yakima Valley Youth and Justice Forum on Sept. 25. Students from Sunnyside, White Swan, East Valley, Mabton and Toppenish learned about the justice system, their legal rights and career opportunities in law, public safety and related fields.
Students heard from judges, attorneys, law enforcement officers and other justice professionals, with sessions covering interactions with law enforcement, rights at school, social media, immigration and pathways to becoming a lawyer. During the interactive “You Be the Judge” exercise, students considered a sentencing scenario and the factors judges weigh when making decisions.
The Forum connected students with professionals from their communities and highlighted the many ways they can contribute to the justice system. The event was made possible through partnerships with Heritage University, the Washington State Minority and Justice Commission, the Tamaki Foundation and community partners.
