Nursing
I became an BSN RN in 1983, graduating from the Hunter College/Bellevue School of Nursingin NYC. (Yes, that Bellevue). I did hospital nursing on med/surg floors and the emergency department in New York City.
I was able to go to graduate school with tuition assistance through our nurses’ union at Columbia University and graduated in 1989 as a family nurse practitioner. My first job as an NP was in the emergency department of the same hospital, the fast track clinic. It was a terrible job. My husband, 3 year old daughter and I went to the People’s Republic of China to teach English to high schoolers for a year. On my return I did acute care as an NP in the surgery department. This was a great job.
We relocated to the Pacific Northwest. In 2000. I landed with a breast surgery practice and managed the post op complications, the benign breast disease, and monitoring high risk patients, of which there are many. This was also a great job. I retired in 2019.
I so appreciate doing clinical supervision for Heritage nursing students because despite its many heart aches and back aches, nursing is a wonderful and very gratifying profession. I love seeing this profession grow with women and men from the Heritage community.
