Master of Arts in Multicultural English Literature and Language

About Our Program

Reflecting, relating, embracing, and understanding. These words will guide your M.A. studies in Multicultural English Literature and Language at Heritage University. Our program offers literature courses that go beyond the traditional canon and contemporary writing courses that speak to a broad range of professional and academic pursuits. Within each course, we seek answers to the most challenging questions of our time and explore how our field of study can actively participate in positive change in our communities.

In the M.A. in Multicultural English Literature and Language program, you will:

Connect your studies to the world around you and your life experiences. All undergraduate degrees are welcome.
Collaborate and build relationships with professors and student colleagues to explore and understand our multicultural world.
Choose your path. Full-time and part-time options. Online or in person. Thesis or teaching focus.

Two Focus Areas: Thesis and Teaching

The Thesis Focus is for students most interested in pursuing Ph.D. or M.F.A. studies, community college or university level teaching and private/public sector opportunities.

The Teaching Focus is for students already certified to teach in K-12 and interested in dual enrollment programs or community college teaching.

What Courses You Will Take:

Your course selection depends upon your individual goals and whether you are taking the Thesis Focus or the Teaching Focus. You will work with your advisor to select courses from core offerings, focused offerings and electives.

Courses in the literature strand may include Women’s Literature, LGBTQ+ Literature, Literature for Young Adults, Native American Literature, Modern Science Fiction, and focus courses on specific author groups. Writing courses reflect contemporary concerns, including Writing for Change: Advocacy and Civic Engagement, Memoir and Narrative Medicine, Poetry, and Creative and Technical Writing. Courses offered will vary by semester.
