College Preparedness & Placement Services
Students arrive to Heritage University from diverse experiences, histories, and backgrounds. The Composition program strives to meet you where you are by offering a variety of college-level and college-preparatory courses that provide students with necessary foundations for success. Please read these descriptions of our introductory Heritage writing courses.

English 99B is a non-college credit writing course taken before college writing

It helps you get more comfortable with reading and writing

In this class we will:

Read, annotate, and discuss texts of various difficulties together in class and in small groups

Work on class essays and projects during class time with instructor support

Learn about doing research for academic purposes
-
Reflect on your writing and learning experiences and how they impact you going into college level writing and reading

English 99B will prepare you to take the first required HU writing course, English 101 the semester following.

This pathway is best if you want additional practice with writing before taking college credit writing classes.

This path includes two college-credit writing classes taken at the same time: English 100C and English 101 for six credits total

English 101 is the first required writing course for a college degree (see below for a full description)

English 100C provides additional support and writing opportunities to help you be successful in English 101 and your future courses

English 100C will provide help with:

Understanding college writing expectations

Reading college level texts

Understanding what you personally need to grow as a writer

Completing your first required college writing course (English 101)

This pathway is best if you want to get right into college credit writing classes but would also like to have some additional support in developing and practicing your writing skills and knowledge.

English 101 is the first college-credit writing course required for a degree at Heritage

Focuses on building your understanding of rhetorical contexts and genres that are common in academic spaces

In 101 you will be asked to:

Analyze complex texts to understand their meaning, purpose, and rhetorical effectiveness

Conduct academic research and read specialized texts within specific academic fields

Make claims with evidence and support using standard academic style guides
-
Create multimodal texts (essays, presentations, visuals) to communicate your ideas in various ways

This pathway is best if you feel confident in your writing and reading skills and can complete college level reading and writing assignments mostly on your own, outside of class.
